At Agilico, we believe in the power of the circular economy. Through our Agilico Zero initiative, we’re committed to extending the life of multifunctional devices, reducing our carbon emissions, and minimising waste. A key part of this mission is the way we harvest parts with surgical precision from lightly used MFDs to give other devices a second life.
And why wouldn’t we reuse parts where we can? It’s a win for business and the planet. Our mantra, inspired by Walter Stahel – the pioneer of the circular economy – is proudly displayed in all our local refurbishment centres.
This philosophy guides everything we do, making Agilico the UK’s pioneering circular-first managed print provider.
Why Parts Harvesting Matters
One big challenge we face today is the fate of end-of-life devices. A staggering 70% of these devices in the UK are exported, increasing carbon emissions and contributing to unnecessary landfill waste. That’s simply wrong!
With the support of our partners like Konica Minolta and Ricoh, we’re taking a different path – one that prioritises extending the life of lightly used devices. In the words of Warren Colby, Managing Director of Agile Print Technology at Agilico:
”We understand the challenge of shifting traditional approaches, but the environmental benefits, combined with the ability to extend the life of lightly used devices, make it the right decision for clients and suppliers alike.
Harvesting Success in 2024
Last year, we harvested almost 10,000 reusable parts from MFDs during our refurbishment process. Every salvaged component is carefully inspected and prepared for reuse, ensuring our refurbished devices deliver the same reliability and performance as brand-new ones.
For any parts that can’t be reused, we’ve partnered with trusted recycling specialists, like CCL, to ensure nothing ends up in landfill. At their facility in Irvine, end-of-life devices are carefully dismantled by hand to separate metals, plastics, glass, and other components. Copper wire is recovered from cables and reused to create new products, while precious metals such as gold, zinc, and platinum are extracted from circuit boards and other parts. Depending on the type of circuit board, some chips can even be reused. With over 25 years of expertise in WEEE recycling, CCL plays a vital role in helping us to support the circular economy and minimise waste.
Sustainability in Action
Our Agilico Zero initiative is more than just a concept – it’s a movement. Watch our latest video created in partnership with Ricoh to see how we’re transforming the way devices are used, reused, and recycled.
